Sitting On Top of the World

The Waimea Canyon

The Napali Coast is one of the most beautiful and unreachable places in the Hawaiian Islands. You can’t drive there and the hike along the coast is difficult (and closed as of this writing).

But you can see it from a bird’s eye view, if you are willing to drive a fair amount and then do some easy hiking.

Drive all the way to the south part of Kauai and keep following the signs to the Waimea Canyon. Stop along the way up for some great views back down on the dry side – but wait – there’s so much more. Yes, it’s a LONG drive, but worth it – totally worth it.

Once you get to the top you come into Koke’e State Park. Park your car and walk along the trail to the right. It’s not a difficult hike and you can go a long way if you want. But the real views down the Napali Coast aren’t that far. See some of the vistas we saw the day we visited in the gallery below.

Be sure to visit the state parks website for Waimea Canyon and Koke’e State Park before you go.
