Hurricane Lowell struck Kauai on September 8, 2026. The wind and storm surge destroyed several homes and damaged dozens of others. Due to some unfortunate messaging, many visitors simply canceled their trips. It will take quite a while for the island to recover economically, even as the physical recovery moves quickly.
It would be difficult to list all the sites and businesses open and closed, but we suggest you search for your favorite place prior to coming. But for the most part, Kauai is open, beautiful, and ready for you. We’ll update this post occasionally with updates.

Poipu Beach Park is open! Lots of room on the beach right now - especially because it's been rainy. But the county folks have done great work getting the beach back and shape. Also - Brennecke's is open - the restaurant, deli and Puka Dog shop. Great time to come to Kauai - it's not crowded!
We counted nearly twenty honu sleeping at the baby pool at Poipu Beach last night. The great news is that turtle education and protection is getting organized here. Signs and cones help people know to keep their distance.
